Top Computer Misnomers

Whether you are a computer novice or expert, there are a few words that people constantly get wrong.  It’s ok if you don’t know the exact term, we’ve all been there.  So, without further ado, here’s the list:

Term Incorrect Correct
Memory The size or free space of the hard drive The amount of RAM installed.
Processor/CPU The computer case and everything in it (The Computer) The main chip in the computer. 99% of the software runs on this chip.
Screensaver The picture on your desktop (Wallpaper) The program that runs after a few minutes of inactivity
The Internet Internet Explorer (Web Browser) A vast network of computers
Hard disk A 3.5″ floppy disk. The main disk inside the computer.
Ethernet The network card/port in a computer (NIC) The type of cable used in 99% of computer network.
Cable Modem The network card/port in a computer (NIC) The device that converts a cable tv line to an ethernet cable

Remember, while it is ok to use the term incorrectly, you must make sure the person/people you are talking with understand what you are saying.
